Internal Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins that swell around the anus and rectum. They can be either internal or external. By themselves hemorrhoids are rarely a serious cause for concern, but they can be extremely bothersome.Common causes for hemorrhoids include:

  • Remaining in a prolonged standing position
  • Poor bowel habits
  • Constipation
  • Pregnancy
  • Obesity
  • Frequent straining

Hemorrhoids can cause several uncomfortable but non-severe complications such as thrombosis or pain, bleeding, and/or itching and irritation around the rectum. To reduce the discomfort from hemorrhoids, your physician may suggest eating plenty of high fiber foods, and possibly adding an over-the-counter fiber supplement like Benefiber or Metamucil. Also avoid trying to delay or prevent a bowel movement from occurring, which will help reduce the need to strain later. Getting more exercise, drinking plenty of liquids, as well as keeping the area around the anus clean and dry, can all assist in the reduction of discomfort caused by hemorrhoids.
